Mount Saint Mary's University and the Department of Catholic Schools of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles have announced a new academic partnership that creates a clear pathway for students from Catholic high schools to pursue higher education, strengthening access, affordability and continuity in Catholic education across the region.
Through a newly signed Memorandum of Understanding, the institutions will launch the Mount Saint Mary’s Catholic College Promise Program, a pilot initiative designed to support qualified students from Archdiocesan schools to pursue higher education at Mount Saint Mary’s.
The pilot program will launch with participation from 12 Catholic high schools in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles: Bishop Alemany High School, Bishop Amat Memorial High School, Bishop Montgomery High School, Immaculate Heart High School, Junipero Serra High School, Louisville High School, Pomona Catholic High School, Sacred Heart High School, Santa Clara High School, St. Anthony High School, St. Genevieve High School, and St. Pius X–St. Matthias Academy.
Grounded in the shared mission and values of both institutions, the program guarantees fall admission to eligible graduates of participating schools who meet established academic and mission-based requirements.
“At the heart of this partnership is our shared commitment to educating the whole person,” said Ann McElaney-Johnson, PhD, president of Mount Saint Mary’s University. “Together with the
Archdiocese of Los Angeles, we are creating a meaningful pathway for young women to continue their Catholic education, grow as leaders and prepare to serve their communities.”
Students who earn a weighted GPA of 3.0 or higher and demonstrate engagement in service, leadership or faith-based activities will be guaranteed admission to the University, with the exception of Nursing and Music programs. Admitted students will receive a comprehensive financial aid package, including both need-based and merit-based support, along with an accelerated admission and financial aid notification timeline.
A select group of admitted students will be named Athenian Fellows, a cohort of 15 students who will receive additional academic, professional and mission-centered support. Through programs offered by Campus Ministry, Career and Professional Development and other campus offices, Fellows will be encouraged to participate in leadership development, service opportunities, and early college experiences such as dual or concurrent enrollment.
“This partnership between Mount Saint Mary’s University and the Archdiocese of Los Angeles reflects our deep commitment to expanding access and opportunity for students across the region,” said Paul Escala, Senior Director and Superintendent of Catholic Schools for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. “Through College Promise, we are proud to offer direct admission to students from 12 participating high schools, creating a clear and supportive pathway to higher education. Together, we are not only creating new pathways, but ensuring students have the support and opportunities to thrive every step of the way.”
Beyond direct admission, the partnership includes collaboration on counselor training, on-the-spot admission events, campus visits, pre-admission advising, and community engagement opportunities that introduce Archdiocesan students to Mount Saint Mary’s before they enroll. Both institutions will also track student outcomes and program effectiveness, with plans to evaluate and refine the pilot over time. The agreement includes a five-year review period and the potential to expand participation to additional high schools.
This partnership between Mount Saint Mary’s University and the Archdiocese of Los Angeles reflects a shared vision to strengthen Catholic education by supporting students academically, spiritually, and personally from high school through college graduation.
