A brightly lit Chalon Circle welcomed hundreds of students for Lighting of the Circle — a beloved Mount tradition kicking off the winter holiday season.

The Mount community welcomed the holiday season in joyful spirit on December 2 as students, faculty, and staff gathered at the Chalon Campus for Lighting of the Circle — one of the University’s most cherished winter traditions. The evening offered a much-needed study break before finals as hundreds of students took in the glow of lights, lively performances, and festive activities that transformed the Chalon Circle into a winter wonderland.

Organized by the Student Activities Council (SAC) and Campus Ministry and Spirituality, this year’s celebration embraced the theme “Lighting the way for a century, honoring Mount Saint Mary’s 100th anniversary. Snow machines turned the courtyard into a whimsical winter backdrop, and a friendly snowman quickly became a favorite photo backdrop, creating a uniquely “snowy” Los Angeles moment.

Holiday treats, hot chocolate, a ramen truck, arts and crafts, and booths hosted by student clubs and organizations brought the evening to life. A Christmas market led by Campus Ministry and Spirituality featured several vendors, including three Mount student entrepreneurs, offering guests the opportunity to shop local and support their peers. Performances by Pangkat Pilipino, Na Pua O Ka ‘Aina, the Mount Chorus, and the dance group The Muses highlighted the talent of the student body. A raffle featuring Disneyland tickets added even more excitement.

SAC President Jettina Krantz ’27 welcomed attendees by reflecting on the meaning behind this year’s theme. “Light reveals the unseen, guides us into the unknown, and gives us hope for the future,” she said. “Tonight is the chance to get into the holiday spirit, spread joy and sing along while engaging in fun activities and enjoying some special holiday treats.”

President Ann McElaney-Johnson also shared words of gratitude and reflection. “As we celebrate 100 years of Mount Saint Mary’s and honor the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet who founded this University, we also celebrate the light of this season. And with the light of Advent comes hope.”

As the countdown began and the Circle illuminated in a colorful glow, the crowd erupted with cheers. The evening marked not only the beginning of the holiday season, but a meaningful moment in the University’s centennial year as students came together to celebrate tradition, community and the light that continues to guide the Mount forward.
